Grades 7 to 10

Junior High School

Four years of the Department of Education's MATATAG curriculum, carried on a special science load. Learners take the eight national learning areas, then add enriched science and mathematics and a Research subject that runs from Grade 7 to Grade 10.

What Changed

The MATATAG phase-in

The Department of Education rewrote the K to 10 curriculum and released it one set of year levels at a time. Junior high reached the end of that schedule in School Year 2026–2027.

  1. SY 2024–2025

    Grade 7 moves first

The MATATAG curriculum reached junior high with Grade 7, alongside Kindergarten and Grades 1 and 4. Fewer learning competencies per subject, more time on each.

  2. SY 2025–2026

    Grade 8 follows

The Grade 7 cohort carries the new curriculum upward while Grade 8 shifts onto it, together with Grades 2, 3, and 5.

  3. SY 2026–2027

Grades 9 and 10 complete the phase

The last two junior high year levels move over with Grade 6. From this year, all of Grades 7 to 10 run one curriculum end to end.

Taken by everyone

Eight learning areas

Junior high under MATATAG runs on eight learning areas. Three national programs sit across them — the National Reading Program, the National Music Program, and Homeroom Guidance.

  • Language

English reading, writing, and oral communication, taught as a foundational literacy area under MATATAG.

  • Filipino

Pagbasa, pagsulat, at panitikan — carried across all four year levels.

  • Mathematics

Algebra, geometry, statistics, and probability, enriched for the school's science load.

  • Science

The spiral progression of earth, life, physical, and chemical science, taught with laboratory hours attached.

  • Araling Panlipunan

Asian and Philippine history, geography, economics, and contemporary issues.

  • Technology and Livelihood Education

Replaced by Research in the special science program, with computer education folded into the Research class.

  • MAPEH

Music, Arts, Physical Education, and Health, taken as one learning area.

  • Values Education

Character formation, carried alongside the Homeroom Guidance Program.

The Science Load

One specialisation each year

In the special science program the Technology and Livelihood Education slot is given to Research, and Science and Mathematics are enriched beyond the national competencies. Each year level carries its own specialised science subject.

Grade 7
Environmental Science
Ecosystems, water and soil quality, and waste — studied on the campus grounds and along the Goa river system before anything is written up.
  • Field sampling and data collection
  • Research 1: the nature of scientific investigation
  • First investigatory project, in pairs
Grade 8
Biotechnology
Fermentation, tissue culture, and applied microbiology, with the laboratory work that the topics need rather than a reading list about them.
  • Culture and sterile technique
  • Research 2: formulating a hypothesis and designing an experiment
  • Investigatory project with a controlled variable set
Grade 9
Consumer Chemistry
The chemistry of what households buy and use — food, cleaning agents, cosmetics, and fuels — tested for what the label claims.
  • Quantitative analysis and titration
  • Research 3: data handling and statistical treatment
  • Product-testing investigatory project
Grade 10
Electronics and Robotics
Circuits, microcontrollers, and control systems, ending in a built and working device rather than a diagram of one.
  • Circuit design and microcontroller programming
  • Research 4: writing and defending the research report
  • Capstone project, defended before a faculty panel
